I happened to be visiting Dazed and Intelechy when the artist, Seraph Kegal and others from LEA arrived to give a discussion about the build. Handy! Seraph spoke eloquently about the work, its meaning and her background. In real life she's an art student from Uruguay, South America and this installation is a student project. The inspiration for the build centres around the concept that in SL we all wear masks of one sort or another, meaning we adopt different looks and personas. Seraph was interested in whether our avatars, as masks, enable us to become new characters that are alien to our true selves, or whether the anonymity they afford release our inhibitions and allow us to become more of what we really are. Her enquiry included,"Who are we in Second Life?", "Who are we on the other side of the computer?" and "How do people perceive me and each other?" Hand drawn elements are incorporated into the build Before Seraph started work in SL, the entire build was formulated in real life. She tried to balance story telling, which is important to her, and her experimentation with the media - after all this is a student assignment. Even though Seraph had planned in advance it was still a steep learning curve. She spent four days too scared to even begin, battling with issues of scale and volume. But begin she did, working from scene to scene and trying not to get too concerned about the enormity of the task. Due to internet constraints Seraph had to get help from another resident to upload all the mesh files. This was annoying and slow but happily for us she had this support. When you arrive you'll be given a Hud to wear and there's a red string you can follow throughout the build that takes you from scene to scene. However Seraph stresses that the string is only a guide and people are free to explore the installation any way they choose as there is no definitive start or or end point. When I visited I used the string and found it helpful because it meant that I didn't miss any elements. While exploring you'll discover a large stage held above the water on two massive stone hands. The stage builds on the 'mask' theme. It's intended as a place where people can 'act out' in any way they choose. Maybe you'd like to use it in some way? It's always hard to know exactly when an artwork is finished. In the end Seraph found she had a plethora of ideas for adaptations but felt these might confuse rather than add to the overall work. And so it is done and you now have the joy of being able to visit Dazed and Intelechy. Don't miss out!
